Everything happens for a reason . . . really??

My friend, Jen, sent this to me, as she and I share a lot of the same views about life and how the universe works. Take from it what you will.

Nick Adenhart Dies

Sometimes there are no lessons to learn, no cautionary tales to tell. Sometimes existence just plain stinks because it does.

Nick Adenhart, the Angels pitcher who shut out the A's for six innings Wednesday night, died with two other people, one of them an Angels employee, when his car was struck by a van running a red light after the game. The driver fled the scene but was caught later and charged with felony hit-and-run.

Nick Adenhart, gone at 22And that's that. Dead, for no better reason except that they were in the wrong place. Top of the world, then gone. And that often is the nature of things. We like to see bigger things in every event, and the hackneyed phrase "There's a reason for everything" is proof of that. Sometimes there isn't a reason except that a guy ran a light and then tried to flee his responsibilities. And maybe that's your cautionary tale.

Perhaps if the driver of the van had not tried to escape, we'd view this a little differently. Maybe a horrible accident would just feel like a horrible accident if the guy had paid attention to his duties as a human being. But then you realize that, well, it is still a horrible accident. Even though the driver tried to skip, the fact is three people got killed because they showed up at a place at the wrong time. Nick Adenhart will be the biggest name (the others have not yet been released at this writing), but the two other people are just as gone. Sometimes existence just plain stinks because it does.

I'd like to believe that everything happens for a reason. I need that right now.
