Shots

Did you know that a person undergoing chemo isn't supposed to be exposed to any live viruses, even indirectly? I learned that this morning. I was back at the pediatrician (every week, I tell you! At least this time it wasn't for a sick child) because the twins were due for some vaccinations that they'll need to enter kindergarten later this year. Apparently they were due for tetanus and MMR, but the nurse told me that the doctor had put a note in both of their charts not to do the MMR at this time because it's a live virus and "father is undergoing chemo." Huh. So I guess my telling the pediatrician that Michael has cancer turned out to be for a useful purpose after all, and not just me purging! Really, silly as this sounds, I was touched that they made a note of it in order to protect Michael.

The girls did pretty well with the shots they did get (tetanus and the TB skin prick). Daisy, our little emotional wreck, was quite calm and didn't even whimper. Annabelle, our little terrorist, screamed and cried and had to be held down by me and a nurse. The nurses gave them (and Lilah, who was along for the ride) all kinds of toys and stickers for being so good.

I love that picture. That's what siblings are for.

that's a very sweet picture of the girls. i've heard that having them get shots later on is way worse than as babies...that the older they get, the more often they look at you as if you've betrayed them...haha. i'm not looking forward to that...

That's pretty awesome the doc made the note in the chart - surprising too really in light of how docs seem to push patients through their offices assembly line fashion nowadays...and really, I think breaking up the shots for kinder is best anyway - I purposely did that for Nate just to minimize how much he got in one jolt and the doc was really good about me wanting to do it in two visits a month apart...glad at least one of them was easy for you :) Lisa
